Hobbit Question 1 Choose one conflict in The Hobbit, and explain how Tolkien uses it to move the story forward. Don't forget to cite page number when appropriate.
March 3, 2011 Answer: The conflict was character against character because when Bilbo lost all the dwarves and Gandalf because he hit his head, Bilbo ran into a goblin named Gollum inside the cave. Bilbo was lost in the cave and didn't know his way out, so the only way out was if Gollum showed Bilbo the way out. The only way Gollum would show Bilbo the way out was if he answered Gollum's riddles correctly. Tolkien used this to the story forward by questioning if Bilbo would find his way out of the cave and would Bilbo ever find the dwarves and Gandalf again. I found this information all in chapter five (pages 68-90) ~This is too brief. It is a good example of Character vs. Character, but I wanted more details. ~Mrs. Best

Hobbit Answer 2
The dwarves, Bilbo, and Gandalf hear the wargs howling, so Bilbo, the dwarves, and Gandalf climb up a tree to keep themselves safe. The wargs found them and surrounded the tree that they were in, and they also waited for the goblins, their partners, to arrive. When the wargs were still waiting for the goblins to arrive, Gandalf set pine cones on fire and threw it at the wargs because wargs are afraid of fire. The fire also set the warg's fur on fire and they all ran into the woods. Then the goblins came, sang their song, and set the tree that Bilbo, the dwarves, and Gandalf were on on fire. The Lord of the Eagles then came and rescued Bilbo, the dwarves, and Gandalf, but Bilbo was almost left behind. Thankfully he grabbed onto Dori's legs before they could leave him, and then they all were safe flying on the eagles back away from the goblins and wargs. ~This is such a fun event. I would have liked to hear your reaction to this. ~Mrs. Best
Question March 22 Think about the times you have learned a new skill, moved, changed schools, competed in sports, welcomed a new pet, discovered a new friend, performed in front of an audience, or had a terrifying fall. These events are adventures in process. Have you grown or changed from your experience with any of these situations, as Bilbo grew and changed because of his adventure with the dwarves? Recall a time when something happened to cause you to grow and change in a positive way. Respond on your wiki page.

When I was seven years old, my family and I would all go to Florida for Easter break. I loved going to Florida with the hot weather, the twistey water slides at the pool, and shopping. One thing that made me terrified in Florida was when my mom said we were going to the Golf of Mexico. I didn't like this because whenever I would go into the water I couldn't get the thought of being eaten by a shark or getting stung by a jellyfish. The worst part on the way to the beach in the car was my dad was talking about how his friend got stung by a jellyfish and how his friend was in pain! Of course my dad had to tell us that story right before we were going to Golf of Mexico! When we got to the beach I wouldn't even go near the water, scared to death that I would get stung or eaten, so Christina, my sister, and I made sand castles together. Then Anthony (my brother), my mom, my dad, Christina, and I all wanted to collect sea shells. When we were collecting unique sea shells, Anthony found this shell that looked really weird. After a few minutes an animal started to crawl out of the shell but it wasn't a crab. The animal looked slimy and disgusting and I screamed because it looked really scary too. My brother started chasing me with the shell, and he chased me into the ocean. I didn't relize that I was in the water until a big wave knocked me over. At that moment I loved the water because of the birds chirping, waves crashing into rocks, and the relaxing and refreshing feel of the water. I felt like if Anthony haven't had chased me into the ocean, I would have been missing out on something really enjoyable. This made me become a better person because it made me stronger because I conquered my fear. Now I am really outgoing and I think it's because of this happening to me because I don't want to be missing out on anything anymore. I think that Bilbo has conquered a lot in his life too on this journey because before he never would have thought that he would be going on an adventure to get treasure from the dragon Smaug. He was very calm, he was very organized, and loved to eat. Before Bilbo had no adventure in him. Now he is on an adventure, being the leader to get the hoard of treasure. Bilbo is also very brave now too by being the first one out of the dwarves to go into Smaug's lair to look for the treasure and by saving the dwarves from the Elven King and the spiders. Bilbo and I have changed for the better in both of our adventures. ~ Good connection, Nicole! Those brothers - hey? I have FIVE!!! ~Mrs. Best
Hobbit Question 4 March 29, 2011
If Thorin could have lived, do you think he would have regretted his greed? What do you think Tolkien is trying to teach us about material wealth by Thorin's death? In your response, site textual evidence to support your response. Use page numbers too.
Answer 4 March 30, 2011
If Thorin could have lived I think he would have regretted his greed considering that the dwarves, Bilbo, Gandalf, and Beorn put the Arkenstone with him in his grave. Thorin was just so happy to have found the Arkenstone that belonged to his ancestors. I think that Thorin would be very grateful for that. I think that Tolkien is trying to teach us that friendship means more than money or jewls. True friends will always be there for you and you can't buy friendship. ~ This is true, but way too brief. ~Mrs. Best
